Benjamin Lyman lived in East Hartford, Connecticut, where he served with the 6th Company of the 19th Regiment of Connecticut militia, as evidenced by a series of warnings or notices of inspection and exercise. Two mathematical workbooks may have been kept by Benjamin and he received a number of rewards of merit as a student, as did his sister Mary. The Benjamin moved to Manchester, Connecticut, where he made carriages and wagons and announced his patented and improved cast iron hubs through a broadside printed by Goodwin & Co. of Hartford.
